How To Decorate The Best Fall Porch
I am so excited to be writing about something that I've been waiting so long for. I've been thinking this one through in my head for months and it's been so fun learning and giving a fall porch a go for the first time!
Welcome to my she shed! This is where I work everyday. It first arrived in January so I haven't gotten to decorate for fall or Christmas yet. I wanted to share some tips with you that I've learned from trail and error decorating on my porch to help you with yours!
Here are some materials that I used. Please feel free to add or only use what you love. Also a lot of these items are interchangeable if you don't have the exact items I have!
- Pumpkins of different sizes and texture
- Metal bucket
- Hay Bail
- Extra accessories of your choosing like signs, little filler decorations, or vintage treasures
Here's a quick list of some fun vintage treasures that might look cute with your porch!
- Lunch Box
- Picnic Basket
- Rusty Tins
First, I've found that I love symmetry. For the entry leading to the porch I liked having everything match on either side. I tried it a few ways and it felt more grand and cohesive when I had two mums on one side and two mums on the other.
You'll see here my first round of decorating. This was in the beginning of September when my local farms didn't have a large selection available yet, and I knew that so I worked with what I found. I loved finding the orange mums--it was for sure the right choice! Everyone helped me on Instagram pick. I love when the flowers bloom and it's just a ball of happy flowers packed together.
I put my mums in crocks after seeing them on Liz Marie Galvan's blog a long while ago. I found some crocks over the summer just in time for fall. Mine are 5 gallon. They are very heavy and come in different styles.
Okay now for the pumpkins! I love getting the pumpkins that stack! I heard so many names for them I don't know which is the technical term, but when you see them you'll know haha. When they stack from big to small it just makes my heart sing. Make sure when you're picking out pumpkins they don't have any soft spots on them...no matter how much you love them! They won't last--I know from experience. Spend your money wisely and choose some pumpkins without and bumps or bruises. You'll be glad you did!
Choose some that matches your color scheme. I was choosing between orange, classic fall, and a muted color scheme of neutrals. My heart wanted orange and I'm so glad I did because it's such a true color of fall. I chose pumpkins around that, orange, white, green. All in different colors, sizes, and style. One thing to note, you can't have enough pumpkins or mums. As a rule of thumb, if you're able, get two more of each than you think you need. I went out for mums on three different grocery trips and found the porch came together so much better when I had enough material on hand.
I started with placing my mums and then went in and filled with flowers. I liked most of the "action" going on near the edge of the porch down to my first step. I don't have many steps so it was going to look different than those dreamy pictures on Pinterest. I made an entry way with my two crocks and like I said I filled in.
Don't forget some twine or something to tie up your corn stalks with and some scissors. I got two stalks one for either side and for this porch, I felt like it was enough! Just to note, it took until about mid September for me to find these locally. My pick you own pumpkin patch just opened up last weekend (a few days ago) so I need to remember to be patient for this! September 1st I'm always like..."okay here we go! Where's the pumpkins!"
I've changed my porch set up multiple times. Give yourself permission to do this because it takes time and sleeping on it. Don't forget when you're arranging pumpkins, you can stack, line them up, tilt them on the side, and do whatever you feel like! Put them up the walkway, put them on top of your stacked crates.
When the hay, I wasn't sure about it at first, but just the other day I took my plaid decor out of storage and now I love it! You can put your mums in any container! Get creative and fun.
I'm going to give you some examples and you can take away anything that works for you. Also remember that sometimes looking at pictures can help inspire or trigger a new idea for you! Make it your own and make it feel what makes you happy. I hope that I can share some ideas with you. Thank you for stopping by the blog!
